Xerox Instant Print Kiosk
Role: Co-Designer (UI/UX)
Tools: Axure RP
The Xerox Instant Print Kiosk is a self-service terminal in Staples retail stores where customers can copy, scan, print, and fax. Xerox was rebuilding the application to match its new design system and accessibility standards. I co-led the redesign and was responsible for end-to-end production of this project.
Note: The images on this page are screenshots from an in field retail machine and contain elements of glare and reflection. Digital cleanup was used to present them in a representative state.
The Problem
The visual style no longer matched Xerox's new design standards. Additionally, user feedback revealed pain points to the old user flow including redundant confirmation and settings modals and screens. During the design process for the new hardware, we encountered an inconsistency between the native Android system and our base resolution for screens. To address this, we applied a scaling multiplier to our screen designs when developers built them. We were also tasked with adhering to WCAG guidelines in accordance with a new company initiative and approached the project with the implementation of it in mind.
The Process
My co-designer and I worked side by side each day sharing responsibilities and often brainstorming and trading ideas, screens, and iterations back and forth. I was responsible for many of the screens shown here including the switchboard, browse modal, main screens, and settings list. Firstly, we audited the existing product, mapped its pain points, and gathered requirements from stakeholders. Then we wrote up a schedule and plan for prioritizing screens, workflows, settings, etc. to be delivered over the project’s lifespan. We built high-fidelity screens, modals, buttons, interactions etc. and shared them with stakeholders for feedback and iteration opportunities. We extensively documented all aspects of screens and interaction for the developers, including referencing style guidelines and assets, such as icons. Lastly, when each live build was delivered, we tested and validated the entire application, wrote and resolved bugs in DevOps.
Outcome
We rebuilt the entire application including cutting key pain points such as redundant screens and improved the speed of the service for the user. Brought the service in line with current company style guidelines and introduced WCAG accessibility. The Xerox Instant Print Kiosk was green lit and replaced the old service. It is now live in stores across the U.S. and Canada.
